IRS Scams

There are a few IRS scams circulating that involve being contacted by phone or email. The caller may either be a computer or person. They will impersonate an IRS official threatening a revocation of driver’s license, arrest, or jail time if you do not pay immediately. They may ask you to buy a prepaid debit card & call back with the account number or wire money directly.

Another scam involves a caller stating you have a refund awaiting you and will ask for your personal information. This can be used to commit identity theft.

NEVER SHARE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, CREDIT CARD NUMBERS, BANK ACCOUNT NUMBERS OR ANY OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH  ANYONE WHO CALLED CLAIMING TO BE FROM THE IRS.

The IRS will not:

  • Threaten arrest

  • Target immigrants

  • Will not request money be transferred via phone or wired. If a problem arises, the IRS will provide you notice in writing and allow you to appeal and protest the amount owed.

  • Make follow up calls claiming to be a government or law enforcement official.

If a scammer calls you. . .

  • Hang up the phone. Do not engage the caller. If you engage, they can possibly record your voice and that can be used to commit identity theft.

  • Do not provide any personal or financial information.

  • Alert the U.S. Treasury General for Tax Administration of the call. 1-800-366-4484, www.tigta.gov

  • Call the IRS at their published number directly if you believe you owe taxes.
